Alibaba Big Data Initiative Begins

Driven by the burgeoning data volumes from Taobao and Tmall, Alibaba Group's internal engineering teams begin serious efforts to develop a proprietary, ultra-scalable big data processing platform.

Significance

This marked the genesis of what would become MaxCompute, born out of a critical internal need for a unified data processing solution beyond traditional databases and early Hadoop clusters.
