Alibaba Group officially established Aliyun (later renamed Alibaba Cloud), tasked with building a global cloud computing platform based on its proprietary Apsara operating system.

Significance

This marked Alibaba's formal commitment to developing its own cloud infrastructure, providing the foundational platform upon which ApsaraDB RDS would eventually be built and offered.
