Alibaba Group officially established Alibaba Cloud (Aliyun) to develop a cloud computing platform for its own e-commerce business and eventually for external customers.

Significance

This laid the foundational cloud infrastructure and engineering talent pool that would be critical for building an advanced ML platform like PAI years later.
