Alibaba Group officially launches Aliyun, its cloud computing arm, initially to support its internal e-commerce and data processing needs.

Significance

This marked the genesis of the platform that would eventually require and host the SDKs. It demonstrated Alibaba's commitment to cloud infrastructure.
