Amazon Aurora Announced

AWS unveiled Amazon Aurora, a new relational database engine combining the speed and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open-source databases.

Significance

This laid the foundational architecture (decoupled storage and compute) upon which Aurora Global Database would later be built, making its block-level replication possible.
