Amazon Aurora Initial Launch

AWS announced the general availability of Amazon Aurora (MySQL compatible) at re:Invent, fundamentally changing expectations for cloud-native relational databases.

Significance

This laid the architectural groundwork, with its decoupled storage and compute, that made Aurora Global Database possible later on. It proved that a managed cloud relational database could offer performance comparable to commercial databases at a fraction of the cost.
