AWS introduced Amazon Aurora, a new relational database service offering MySQL and PostgreSQL compatibility with high performance and availability through a novel decoupled storage architecture.

Significance

This was the foundational technology that Aurora Global Database would build upon. Aurora's unique storage layer made the concept of efficient cross-region physical replication feasible.
