Amazon Aurora Launch

AWS launched Amazon Aurora, a MySQL-compatible relational database built for the cloud, offering five times the performance of standard MySQL and enhanced durability.

Significance

This was the foundational technology upon which Aurora Global Database would later be built, demonstrating AWS's novel approach to cloud-native database architecture by decoupling compute and storage.
