Amazon Aurora Launch

AWS announced Amazon Aurora, a new relational database engine combining the speed and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open-source databases.

Significance

Aurora's innovative architecture (decoupled compute and storage, quorum-based replication) became the fundamental building block upon which Aurora Global Database would later be built, demonstrating AWS's commitment to pushing database technology.
