Amazon Aurora Launch

AWS launched Amazon Aurora for MySQL during Dr. Werner Vogels' keynote at re:Invent. This cloud-native relational database reimagined the traditional architecture by separating compute and storage.

Significance

Aurora's novel shared-storage architecture and log-based replication within a region laid the foundational technical groundwork that would later be extended to create Aurora Global Database.
