Amazon Aurora (MySQL-compatible) Launch

AWS launched Amazon Aurora, a new cloud-native relational database service with a novel architecture that decoupled compute and storage, offering MySQL compatibility with five times the performance of standard MySQL and enhanced durability.

Significance

This was the foundational technology upon which Aurora Global Database would later be built. Its shared-storage, log-oriented architecture was key to enabling fast, consistent replication.
