Amazon Aurora (MySQL-compatible) Launch

AWS unveiled Amazon Aurora, a new cloud-native relational database service compatible with MySQL, promising significant performance improvements and enhanced availability over traditional databases.

Significance

This laid the foundational architecture – particularly the decoupled storage layer – upon which Aurora Global Database would later be built. It proved AWS could innovate dramatically in the relational database space.
