Amazon Web Services launched Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) in beta, providing scalable compute capacity in the cloud.

Significance

EC2 provided the foundational virtual machine instances ('cattle, not pets') that Auto Scaling would later manage dynamically, making elasticity possible.
