Amazon Web Services launches Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), providing resizable compute capacity in the cloud.

Significance

EC2 laid the fundamental groundwork for Auto Scaling by providing the virtual instances that could be automatically managed. Without EC2, Auto Scaling would have no 'servers' to scale.
