Amazon's Internal SOA Mandate
Jeff Bezos famously issued a mandate that all teams at Amazon must expose their data and functionality through service interfaces, and communicate only via these interfaces. This forced a massive internal re-architecture.
Significance
This mandate directly led to Amazon building highly scalable, decoupled internal services, which became the blueprint for AWS's external offerings like SQS. It instilled a 'services culture' foundational to the cloud.
