Amazon's Service-Oriented Mandate

Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, famously issued a company-wide mandate dictating that all teams would expose their data and functionality only through service interfaces. Any internal communication between teams had to happen via these interfaces. Failure to comply would result in termination.

Significance

This aggressive, top-down mandate forced Amazon to adopt a fine-grained, service-oriented architecture, effectively laying the groundwork for what would later be recognized as a microservices approach, long before the term was coined. It directly led to Amazon's immense scalability and agility.
