Amazon S3 Launch

Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) was launched, offering object storage. While highly durable and scalable, it wasn't suitable for block-level storage needed by operating systems and databases.

Significance

S3 demonstrated the potential of cloud storage but also highlighted the need for a different type of storage (block storage) for traditional applications, laying the conceptual groundwork for EBS.
