Amazon SQS API Release

Amazon Web Services launched its first public service, Simple Queue Service (SQS), exposing a raw API for developers to interact with a managed message queue. This marked the very first step in Amazon's public cloud offerings.

Significance

SQS was the precursor to the entire AWS platform, demonstrating the viability of exposing core infrastructure as a service via APIs and laying the groundwork for the need for better developer tools.
