ARPANET HOSTS.TXT established

Elizabeth Feinler's team at SRI-NIC began maintaining a centralized `HOSTS.TXT` file for the ARPANET, manually mapping hostnames to IP addresses.

Significance

This was the foundational, albeit unscalable, naming system that DNS was designed to replace. It demonstrated the critical need for a naming service.
