AWS EC2 and S3 Launch

Amazon Web Services formally launched its first two major services, EC2 for compute and S3 for storage, laying the foundational infrastructure for future managed services like RDS.

Significance

Established the nascent cloud computing market and provided the underlying virtual infrastructure upon which RDS would later be built, demonstrating the viability of on-demand, utility-based computing.
