AWS EC2 Beta Launch

Amazon Web Services launched the Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) in beta, offering resizable compute capacity in the cloud. This marked the beginning of Infrastructure as a Service.

Significance

Established the foundational service that would eventually necessitate Elastic IP Addresses, by introducing the concept of ephemeral instances with dynamic IP assignments, creating the problem EIPs would solve.
