AWS EC2 Launch

AWS launched Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), providing scalable compute capacity in the cloud.

Significance

EC2 laid the fundamental groundwork for all subsequent AWS services, including RDS, by offering the underlying virtualized infrastructure upon which managed services could be built. It also highlighted the difficulty of managing stateful applications on raw VMs.
