Amazon Web Services launches Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), providing resizable compute capacity in the cloud.

Significance

EC2 provided the fundamental building blocks (virtual machines) that cloud load balancers would eventually manage and scale across, making the problem of distributing traffic across a fleet of instances critical.
