AWS EC2 Launch (Beta)

Amazon Web Services launched Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) in beta, offering virtual machine instances. Initially, these instances only had ephemeral local storage.

Significance

This laid the foundation for cloud computing and immediately highlighted the critical need for persistent storage, which EBS would later fulfill.
