AWS EC2 Public Launch

Amazon Web Services officially launched its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service, offering resizable compute capacity in the cloud as virtual machines.

Significance

This event fundamentally enabled the concept of self-managed MySQL on EC2 by providing the flexible, on-demand infrastructure needed to host databases without physical hardware.
