AWS Lambda Launch

AWS Lambda, a serverless compute service, was announced. This event created an immediate and strong demand for a service like API Gateway to easily expose these new serverless functions via HTTP endpoints.

Significance

Lambda made serverless backends a reality, but the lack of a managed API front-end limited its immediate utility for external applications. API Gateway would soon fill this crucial gap.
