Basecamp Project Begins

David Heinemeier Hansson starts developing the project management tool Basecamp for 37signals, using Ruby. This internal project is the crucible from which Ruby on Rails is extracted.

Significance

Without the need to build Basecamp, DHH would not have had the motivation or the practical problem to solve that led to the creation of Rails.
