Bell Labs withdraws from MULTICS

AT&T, through Bell Labs, decides to withdraw from the costly and complex MULTICS project, leaving Ken Thompson and others without their preferred interactive computing environment.

This withdrawal created the vacuum and motivation for Ken Thompson to begin designing a simpler, more efficient alternative, directly leading to Unix's inception.
