Around 2013, a small team at Cloudera began sketching out a new storage system designed to bridge the gap between analytical and operational workloads in the Hadoop ecosystem.

This marked the initial conceptualization and foundational design phase for what would become Apache Kudu, identifying the critical need for hybrid storage.
