Development of Integrated Data Store (IDS)
Charles W. Bachman developed IDS, one of the first network model database systems, for General Electric's manufacturing operations. It allowed multiple applications to access a shared pool of data.
Significance
IDS was a seminal precursor to modern DBMS, demonstrating the advantages of a centralized, integrated data store and setting the stage for the CODASYL approach, even though it lacked data independence.
