Development of Network File System (NFS)

Sun Microsystems, led by Bill Joy, released the first version of the Network File System (NFS), an open standard for distributed file sharing that allowed users to access files over a network as if they were local.

Significance

NFS became a cornerstone protocol for Unix-based networked storage, providing the fundamental mechanism for file sharing that early NAS devices would leverage extensively.
