Elastic NV License Change Announcement

Elastic NV announces that future versions of Elasticsearch and Kibana (7.11 onwards) will no longer be under the Apache 2.0 license, moving instead to SSPL or Elastic License.

Significance

This announcement directly triggered the events leading to the creation of OpenSearch, as it stripped cloud providers and much of the open-source community of the ability to use or extend Elasticsearch under a truly permissive license.
