EMC Centera Launch

EMC launched Centera, an early commercial Content-Addressable Storage (CAS) system. It focused on immutable archiving, storing data objects based on their content hash.

Significance

Centera was a precursor, showcasing the value of content addressing and fixed content storage, shifting from file paths to unique identifiers for data integrity and long-term retention. It was not general-purpose object storage but conceptually paved the way.
