Fielding's HTTP/1.1 and URI Work

Roy Fielding was a primary author for the HTTP/1.1 specification (RFC 2068, then RFC 2616) and a co-author of the URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) specification (RFC 2396), foundational elements of the web that directly informed his later work on REST.

Significance

This hands-on experience in shaping the web's core protocols gave Fielding a deep understanding of its architectural strengths and weaknesses, directly leading to his formalization of REST.
