Formed by Sun Microsystems and other industry leaders, the Liberty Alliance was an influential consortium dedicated to developing open standards for federated identity and Single Sign-On (SSO).

Significance

This alliance was a direct response to Microsoft's proprietary 'Passport' system, advocating for an open, standards-based approach to identity federation. It became a primary driver for the development of SAML.
