Formation of the Khronos Group

A consortium of leading hardware and software companies formed to create open standard, royalty-free APIs for authoring and acceleration of parallel computing, graphics, dynamic media, and sensor processing. This was the incubator for OpenGL ES.

Significance

Without the Khronos Group, the collaborative effort needed to define a unified mobile graphics standard like OpenGL ES would have been impossible, leading to continued fragmentation.
