Founding of Akamai Technologies

MIT Professor Tom Leighton and graduate student Daniel Lewin officially founded Akamai Technologies, based on Lewin's PhD thesis work on network optimization algorithms.

Significance

This marked the formal establishment of the company that would pioneer and commercialize Content Delivery Networks, laying the groundwork for a new internet infrastructure paradigm.
