Michaël van Canneyt, Florian Müller, and Marco van de Voort started the Free Pascal Compiler project, aiming for a Turbo Pascal-compatible, multi-platform compiler.

Significance

This laid the essential foundation for Lazarus, providing the robust, open-source Pascal compiler upon which the entire IDE would eventually be built.
