GM-NAA I/O System Introduction

Developed by Robert Patrick at General Motors for their IBM 704 mainframe, this was arguably the first true operating system. It automated job sequencing, reducing human intervention between program runs.

Significance

It marked the shift from single-job batch processing to a system that could automatically load and run a series of jobs, drastically improving machine utilization and setting the precedent for batch operating systems.
