GNU Ada Project Initiation

The Free Software Foundation and New York University (NYU) began a collaboration to develop a free, high-quality Ada compiler for inclusion in the GNU Compiler Collection. Robert Dewar and Edmond Schonberg led the charge.

Significance

This collaboration laid the foundational groundwork for GNAT, explicitly aiming to break proprietary vendor lock-in for Ada users and integrate Ada into the free software ecosystem.
