Google Chrome Release (with V8)

Google Chrome, featuring the V8 JavaScript engine, was released. V8's unprecedented speed for JavaScript execution made the idea of server-side JavaScript viable.

Significance

Without the V8 engine, Node.js's performance would have been severely limited, and its entire premise might not have been practical. V8 provided the necessary high-performance runtime.
