Google Compute Engine Beta Launch

Google officially launched the beta of Google Compute Engine, its Infrastructure-as-a-Service offering, which included rudimentary load balancing capabilities (target pools for VM instances).

Significance

This marked Google's serious entry into the public cloud IaaS market, laying the foundational infrastructure upon which more advanced networking services, including global load balancing, would later be built.
