Green Project Formation

James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton form the Green Project at Sun Microsystems with the initial goal of developing technology for intelligent consumer devices.

Significance

This was the genesis of Java, born out of a perceived need for a platform-independent language for embedded systems, long before the internet became its primary focus.
