Green Project Initiated

A small team at Sun Microsystems, including James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton, started the 'Green Project' to develop technology for the next wave of computing: intelligent consumer devices.

Significance

This marked the clandestine beginning of what would eventually become Java, initially conceived for embedded systems rather than the internet.
