Gavin King released Hibernate 1.0, an open-source ORM solution for Java, offering a more developer-friendly alternative to EJB Entity Beans and manual JDBC.

Significance

Hibernate's emergence proved that POJO-based, annotation-driven ORM was feasible and highly productive, directly inspiring the design and features of the future JPA standard.
