"Impala Storage Layer" internal project initiation

Cloudera engineers, frustrated by the limitations of existing storage solutions for hybrid workloads, began work on a new storage engine to better serve Impala and other analytical engines, initially codenamed "CFile 2.0".

Significance

This was the conceptual birth of Kudu, driven by real-world challenges faced by Cloudera customers and the vision of a truly hybrid data store.
