Inception of Google's Internal Network (Jupiter, Maglev, GFE)

Google began developing its highly specialized, software-defined network infrastructure to handle the massive scale of its internal services like Search and YouTube. This included early designs like Jupiter (datacenters network), and later the Google Front End (GFE) for external traffic, and Maglev for robust load balancing.

Significance

These internal projects provided the blueprints and technological foundation that would eventually be productized as Google Cloud Load Balancing and other Google Cloud networking services, demonstrating the feasibility of large-scale software-defined load balancing.
