INGRES Database Development

Michael Stonebraker, along with Eugene Wong and Gerald Held, began the INGRES project, a pioneering relational database system. INGRES would later become a commercial success and lay the groundwork for POSTGRES.

Significance

This project established Stonebraker's reputation in database research and demonstrated the power of the relational model, but also exposed its limitations, leading to the vision for POSTGRES.
