Ingres Project Begins

Michael Stonebraker and Eugene Wong begin the Ingres project, an early relational database management system, which served as a precursor and intellectual foundation for POSTGRES.

Significance

Ingres was one of the two foundational relational database systems, alongside IBM's System R, and demonstrated the viability of the relational model, directly inspiring Stonebraker's later work on POSTGRES.
