Ingres Project Begins

Michael Stonebraker's initial relational database project, funded by DARPA, which laid much of the conceptual and practical groundwork for his later work.

Significance

Ingres was a pioneering relational database system and the direct predecessor to POSTGRES, providing Stonebraker with the experience and insights that led him to identify the limitations he sought to address.
